A standard, poorly installed driveway might give you 10 to 15 years before it starts spalling (that flaking surface) or cracking. But 30 years? That is absolutely achievable, but it requires a different mindset. It requires treating the driveway as an engineered system, not just a slab of grey stuff. In Canadian winters, the ground moves. It heaves when it freezes and settles when it thaws. If your concrete is sitting on weak, poorly graded soil, it will crack—not because the concrete is bad, but because it was unsupported. The number one mistake we see is a contractor digging down 6 inches and pouring gravel straight on top of clay. That is a recipe for disaster.

Concrete will crack. That is a fact. The goal is not to prevent cracking—it is to control where it cracks. This is done with control joints. In Ontario, we cut these joints within 24 hours of the pour, while the concrete is still green.

The finish you choose has a massive impact on longevity. A smooth, brushed finish is actually better than a heavily exposed aggregate finish for winter survival. Why? Because a rough surface gives ice and salt more area to grip and abrade. A light broom finish is the sweet spot—it provides traction for your feet but doesn't create deep pits for water to pool.
